Championship Sunday Recap

By Teague Roark

Last Sunday we saw the final four teams in the AFC and NFC Championships. This year, the Green Bay Packers hosted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Buffalo Bills. In the NFC, the underdog Buccaneers beat out the Packers to move on to the Super Bowl. There’s a lot of excitement swirling around Tom Brady, the Buccaneers Quarterback, who is going after his seventh Super Bowl ring. In the AFC, Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs quarterback, proved eligible to play, and the Chiefs beat the Bills easily. This Super Bowl matchup between the Chiefs and the Buccaneers is expected to be a great game, and everyone can’t wait to watch it.

Tom Brady might just be the most successful player in sports history. Over the last two decades, he has won six super bowls with the New England Patriots, making him the most prestigious football player of all time, due to his ability to form a dynasty out of one of the worst teams in football. But last season, the Patriots dynasty finally collapsed when they were beaten by the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Wild Card. A large majority of the team moved on, including 43-year-old Tom Brady. Despite his age, Brady is putting up video game numbers, throwing for 4,633 yards and 40 touchdowns on the season. Despite these stats, the Buccaneers were still unable to win their division, but they proved they were the better team when they cruised by the New Orleans Saints, beating them 30 to 20. The Buccaneers may be on a roll after beating the Packers in Green Bay, but the Chiefs are their toughest matchup yet.

This year Mahomes threw for 4,740 yards and 38 touchdowns, an incredible season that has him second in Most Valuable Player voting. According to an article by NBC posted on Jan. 20, Mahomes was listed as a, “limited practice participant” and was still in concussion protocol. He was able to play and played well, though, throwing for 325 yards and three touchdowns. This was good news for all Chiefs fans, as they know their quarterback will be ready for the Super Bowl.

This will be Brady’s 10th Super Bowl appearance in his 21 NFL seasons. This will be Mahomes’ second Super Bowl appearance in his four seasons. Fans believe that Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have a chance of being the next dynasty, as his contract has him staying with the team for 10 more years. This Super Bowl matchup will be between the greatest football player ever and a young Chiefs quarterback with everything to prove and nothing to lose. Stephen A. Smith, a sports talk show host, believes that if Mahomes loses this game, there will be no way he can pass Brady for the greatest football player of all time, “Even if you want seven, you still lost to him [Tom Brady], not once but twice in the postseason. Your only postseason losses of your career.” Both players have a lot to play for, and fans are expecting a show.
